34th NATIONAL WOMEN’S WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Tournament Brackets

The 34th NWWBT started with one of the largest number of teams ever.  Twelve women’s teams from around the country came to Champaign, Illinois, to compete for the National title.  The RIC Sky started out against the Shepherd Lady Stealers, a new team from Atlanta.  Andrea Woodson-Smith and Becca Murray led the Sky with 10 points each with most of the Sky joining in the scoring.  The Sky won 58 to 24.  The next game wasn't so easy.  The Sky took an early lead but struggled to maintain it finally defeating the University of Arizona 61 to 58 with Becca Murray scoring 31 points.  On the second day of the tournament, the Sky faced the defending National Champion University of Illinois.  The Illini’s aggressive defense prevented any scoring by Andrea Woodson-Smith and the Sky was defeated 44 to 26.  Becca Murray had 17 points and Sue Haddick and Elizabeth Cordoba had 4 each.  In their second game of the day the Sky faced the Dallas Lady Mavericks.  A back and forth first half ended with the Sky trailing 27 to 25.  Only able to score 3 field goals in the second half the Sky lost 49 to 38 with Sue Haddick scoring 14 points and Becca Murray 9.  In their last game missing one of their starters, the Sky started very cold trailing at one point 16 to 8 but coming back to tie the game at half time at 20 points each.  Starting the second half with an aggressive press the Sky took the lead and never looked back defeating the Phoenix Mercury 51 to 39.  Andrea Woodson-Smith, Becca Murray, and Gina Wehling each had 13 points in the game.  The Sky finished the tournament in 5th place.  Becca Murray was selected to the second team All Tournament and Gina Wehling was voted Most Improved Player
